At Mandurah Dental Surgery, we understand the importance of a healthy and fully-functioning smile. Cavities caused by poor dental hygiene causes holes to be formed in teeth that can expose nerve endings, causing a great deal of pain and uncomfort due to the teeth becoming so sensitive. Dental fillings provide an excellent choice to restore the beauty and durability of your smile.

When Do I Need Dental Fillings?

Tooth Decay

Tooth Damage

Replacement of a Previous Filling

Tooth decay compromises the enamel and tooth structure, exposing the nerves in your teeth to harmful oral bacteria. We place a filling when we spot decay in your tooth to prevent the decay from spreading.
Tooth decay leads to the formation of cavities and the weakening of the tooth. This results in minor cracks, chipping, or damage to your teeth. In such cases, a dental filling comes in handy as it repairs the broken or cracked tooth.
Although dental fillings are long-lasting, they are not immune to decay and can wear out over time. Our dentists replace the old dental fillings with new ones to ensure continued protection against decay.

Dental Filling Treatment Procedure

 Dental Examination
When you visit us, our dentist inspects the affected tooth thoroughly to understand the severity of the decay and tooth damage. Based on a careful evaluation, we determine whether a dental filling is the best way forward. We recommend procedures like root canals, crowns, tooth extractions, etc., if the decay reaches the pulp of the tooth.

Remove and Fill
Once we finalise that dental filling is the required procedure, we initiate the process by applying anaesthesia to numb the region. Following this, we utilise a specialised drill to remove the damaged tooth material or decayed portion of the tooth. After proper cleaning of the area, we fill in the composite resin material and harden the filling with a special light.

Polish
Once we place the filling, we polish it to ensure that it does not get in the way of your smile or interfere with your bite. We generally use prophy paste onto a small rubber cup, and the spinning of the cup helps remove stains to ensure a smooth tooth surface.

Proper Aftercare
It is important that you take good care of your teeth and fillings. We recommend regular brushing, at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and flossing once a day.

It is wise to avoid chewy, hard, or sticky foods for up to two weeks following the dental filling. Most importantly, you should visit us for regular dental appointments and cleanings.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the dental filling procedure painful?

Our dentists at Mandurah Dental Surgery will do our best to ensure a painless process. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, ensuring you are comfortable during the filling placement process. You may experience some mild discomfort after the anesthesia wears off, but it should subside quickly.

  • How long does a dental filling last?

The lifespan of a dental filling varies depending on the material used and your oral hygiene practices. On average, dental fillings can last 5-15 years or longer with proper care.

  • Can I eat normally after getting a dental filling?

Yes, you can eat normally after getting a dental filling. However, it's a good idea to avoid extremely hot or cold foods immediately after the procedure until any residual numbness subsides.

  • Do dental fillings require special care or maintenance?

Dental fillings do not require special care beyond regular oral hygiene practices. Continue to brush and floss daily and attend regular dental check-ups to ensure their longevity.

  • Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to dental fillings?

While it is extremely rare, some individuals may have allergic reactions to certain dental filling materials, such as amalgam (silver fillings). If you have concerns about allergies, give us a call or book a consultation to explore alternative options.

  • What's the cost of getting a dental filling?

The cost of a dental filling depends on the type of material used and the size of the cavity. Your dentist will provide you with a cost estimate during your consultation.

  • Are there any potential risks or complications associated with dental fillings?

Complications with dental fillings are rare. However, some patients may experience sensitivity or minor adjustments after the procedure. We are able to guide you in managing any persisting filling issues.
